Living Landscapes. A Journey through German Art

Around 30 major works from among the holdings of the Galerie Neue Meister of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden will be brought together with 15 to 20 selected paintings from the Alte Nationalgalerie, Neue Nationalgalerie and the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum für Gegenwart, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, and the Neue Pinakothek, Schack-Galerie and Pinakothek der Moderne of the Bayerische Staatsgem?ldesammlungen, Munich, in a unique exhibition about German landscape painting at the National Art Museum of China.

"Living Landscapes" will present a broad spectrum of top-quality works illustrating the history of German landscape painting over the past 200 years. The theme of “Figure and Landscape” is a determining and unifying factor in this selection of works, which extends from the Romantic period via Expressionism up to the present day. The exhibition will be taking its Chinese and international viewers on a "journey in pictures".

All three of the said periods constitute milestones in the history of art and in the history of Dresden, Berlin and Munich as centres of the arts and of artists. Moreover, all three artistic trends are major collecting focal points for the institutions involved.

In the early 19th century, with Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), Ludwig Richter (1803-1884) and Carl Gustav Carus (1789-1869) working in Dresden, German landscape painting developed into an independent genre and one which continues to be seen as characteristic of German painting per se.

The trends in South German and Northern Romantic painting are illustrated by outstanding works from the Neue Pinakothek in Munich and the Alte Nationalgalerie Berlin. Paintings by Moritz von Schwind (1804-1871), Carl Spitzweg (1808-1885) and Joseph Anton Koch (1768-1839) from Munich and works by Carl Blechen (1798-1840), Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841) and Eduard Gaertner (1801-1877) from Berlin combine with the Dresden paintings to create a truly superb selection of German Romantic landscape paintings.

German Expressionism was significantly influenced by the Dresden group of artists known as DIE BRüCKE, whose members included Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938), Erich Heckel (1883-1970), Max Pechstein (1881-1955) and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976), as well as Otto Mueller (1874-1930) and Emil Nolde (1867-1956), who invented a new form of landscape painting a century after the Romantic era.

The paintings produced by this group, which was founded in the Saxon capital in 1905, explore, among other things, the interplay between figure and landscape. The depiction of people in a natural environment or in an urban landscape is the dominant theme of these works.

Thanks to the well-established collaboration between Berlin, Dresden and Munich, an exquisite, almost matchless selection of BRüCKE paintings will be going on show at the NAMOC. The exhibition will include both early and late works by the most important painters from all three institutions, thus giving rise to particularly exciting contrasts.

Contemporary painting will be exemplified by outstanding works by German painters from both East and West. As well as K.H. H?dicke (1938), Georg Baselitz (1938), who celebrated his 70th birthday in January 2008, will be represented by his painting “Three Fieldworkers” (1967) from the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich. Works by Martin Kippenberger (1953-1997) and Markus Lüpertz (*1941) will exemplify items from the 1980s.

The Galerie Neue Meister will be showing works from one of the major focal points of its collection, namely paintings by very young artists from Dresden and Leipzig, such as Neo Rauch (1960), Eberhard Havekost (1967), Frank Nitsche (1969), Markus Draper (1969) and others. Following on from the tradition of Dresden landscape painting, these artists explore new pictorial spaces that lie between abstraction and figuration, constituting what has become known as the New Leipzig School.

"Living Landscapes" will not only present views of landscapes, however. With its impressive examples of German Romantic painting it will also reflect human existence through the depiction of landscapes and natural scenes. Man and the traces he leaves in the landscape become perceptible through their pictorial representation. The exhibition explores the manifold and sometimes surprising facets of the relationship between man and nature, between subject and space, over the changeful period from the 19th to the 21st century.

The relationship between landscape and figure explored in "Living Landscapes" is also of fundamental importance in understanding Chinese landscape painting. Differences in composition, contents and painting technique illustrate the different character of the European and Chinese pictorial traditions.

This exhibition is a joint project of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, the Bayerische Staatsgemaldesammlungen, and NAMOC.

Gerhard Richter is one of the most important, influential and successful contemporary artists in the world. Even in China's young art scene, the works of Gerhard Richter are discussed more than any others. It is therefore extremely fortunate that the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden and the Frieder Burda Museum, Baden-Baden, now have the opportunity of presenting the first major retrospective of paintings by this Dresden-born artist at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. This is being made possible not least through collaboration with the Bayerische Staatsgemaeldesammlungen, Munich, and the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.

From 15th May until 2nd July 2008 no fewer than 56 paintings produced between 1963 and 2007 will be on show in Beijing, providing a representative overview of the comprehensive and multifaceted oeuvre of this great artist. Gerhard Richter himself determined the selection of works and the style of presentation for the exhibition at the National Art Museum of China.

Over the past 45 years, Richter's painting has been a constant dialogue between figurative and abstract pictorial concepts. Despite his stylistic diversity, his paintings always revolve around the central theme of the artistic representation of contradictory reality.

Gerhard Richter was born in Dresden in 1932. He studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste there before leaving the GDR in 1961. He then began studying art again in Düsseldorf. Since 1964 his paintings have been shown in numerous exhibitions and are held in all the major modern art museums around the world. Most recently, important retrospectives of his works were shown at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2002) and at the K 20 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf (2005). Gerhard Richter has won many awards for his art, including the Praemium Imperiale (1997) in Tokyo and the State Prize of the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia (2000). Since 2007 he has been an honorary citizen of Cologne, where his design for the window in the south transept of the city's famous Cathedral was consecrated in the same year.

Deutsche Museen präsentieren Gerhard-Richter-Retrospektive und deutsche Landschaftmalerei in Peking

Mit zwei Ausstellungen präsentieren sich große deutsche Museen gemeinsam in Peking. Am 14. Mai eröffnen zeitgleich „Living Landscapes. A Journey through German Art“ und „Gerhard Richter. Bilder 1963-2007“ im National Art Museum of China (NAMOC). Gezeigt werden insgesamt fast 120 Werke, die einen beeindruckenden Einblick in wichtige Strömungen deutscher Malerei geben: Das Spektrum reicht von der Romantik über den Expressionismus bis hin zur Gegenwart. Zudem wird mit Gerhard Richter einer der weltweit bedeutendsten, einflussreichsten und erfolgreichsten zeitgenössischen Künstler mit einer Retrospektive gewürdigt, der ersten großen in China überhaupt. Möglich wird dies durch die Zusammenarbeit der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin, der Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden und der Bayerischen Staatsgemäldesammlungen, München. Darüber hinaus verdankt sich die Gerhard-Richter-Ausstellung der Zusammenarbeit mit dem Museum Frieder Burda, Baden-Baden, das einen Großteil der Werke Richters zur Verfügung stellt.

Gemeinsam entfalten die drei großen staatlichen Museumsverbunde Berlins, Dresdens und Münchens eine einzigartige Strahlkraft. Ihre erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit hatte sich erstmals bereits im letzten Jahr mit der Ausstellung „Blicke auf Europa. Europa und die deutsche Malerei im 19. Jahrhundert“ im Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brüssel bewährt. Mit der Gemeinschaftsschau in Peking findet die Kooperation nun eine eindrucksvolle Fortführung. Bereits im Mai letzten Jahres unterschrieben die Generaldirektoren Martin Roth, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Peter-Klaus Schuster, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, und Reinhold Baumstark, Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, München, im Beisein des Bundespräsidenten Horst Köhler und des Staatspräsidenten Hu Jintao in der Großen Halle des Volkes einen Kooperationsvertrag mit dem National Art Museum of China. Nun kann das Ergebnis der Zusammenarbeit dem Publikum in Peking erstmals präsentiert werden.

In der Ausstellung „Living Landscapes. A Journey through German Art“ werden insgesamt 62 Werke aus dem Bestand der großen Museumsverbunde zusammengeführt. Ein hochrangiges Spektrum deutscher Landschaftsmalerei der letzten 200 Jahre, von der Romantik über den Expressionismus bis hin zur Gegenwart, wird dem Besucher aufgefächert. Dabei ist das Sujet „Figur und Landschaft“ das bestimmende und vereinigende Moment. Alle drei Bereiche sind kunsthistorische Meilensteine in der Geschichte Dresdens, Berlins und Münchens als Zentren der Künste und der Künstler. Zudem sind alle drei Strömungen historisch gewachsene Sammlungsschwerpunkte der staatlichen Gemäldesammlungen. Als eine „Reise in Bildern“ präsentiert sich die Ausstellung dem chinesischen und internationalen Publikum und entfaltet dabei eine einzigartige Bandbreite mit ausgestellten Werken von Caspar David Friedrich über Carl Spitzweg und Ernst Ludwig Kirchner bis zu Georg Baselitz, um nur einige Künstler zu nennen.

Mit der Ausstellung „Gerhard Richter. Bilder 1963-2007“ zeigen die Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden und das Museum Frieder Burda, Baden-Baden, in Kooperation mit den Bayerischen Staatsgemäldesammlungen, München, und den Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin die erste große Retrospektive von Bildern des in Dresden geborenen Künstlers in China. 56 Bilder geben einen Überblick über sein umfangreiches und vielfältiges Werk. Gerhard Richter selbst bestimmte die Auswahl der Werke wie auch die Präsentation im National Art Museum of China. Kuratiert wurde die Ausstellung von Götz Adriani.
