short biography

Carolee Schneemann (b. 1939, Fox Chase / Kentucky; d. 2019) was a multidisciplinary artist and a pioneer of performance art in the 1960s and 1970s. Her works on gender roles and sexuality are of great influence on subsequent artist generations. She examined lust and eroticism from a female point of view and confronted the voyeur with the poetics of the female body. In 2017 she was awarded the Golden Lion for her life work at the Venice Biennale.
