The young Cuban artist Wilfredo Prieto (Sanctu Spiritus, 1978) succeeds in generating the maximum meaning from a minimum of form: his straightforward sculptures may have a light touch, but they are also poetical and well thought out. His post-minimalist approach to sculpture is consistent with the strategy adopted by many of his contemporaries, but his highly personal style is a reflection of its grounding in the cultural and social codes of Prieto's homeland, Cuba. Wilfredo Prieto's pared down aesthetic sculptures are seldom openly political, but it is precisely this subtlety that gives his work its strength. The exhibition features a cross-section of his artistic output since 1999, while focusing in particular on his socially critical work on topical themes, such as capitalism, ecology, production (and overproduction), economics and consumerism.
