press release

'21st Century: Art in the First Decade' encompasses an exhibition, publication, blog and a series of public programs that explore the art of the past ten years. Marking the end of the first decade of the new millennium, the project will examine current directions in art practice and also reflect on the conditions for art and exhibition making in the 21st Century. The exhibition includes over 200 works by more than 120 senior and emerging artists from over 45 countries, with most of the work drawn from the Queensland Art Gallery's own collection.

The Queensland Art Gallery has forged new territory in contemporary art over the past 20 years with its Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT) exhibition series, Children's Art Centre, Australian Cinemathèque and Asian and Pacific collections. '21st Century' signals a new commitment to be truly international across its contemporary art collection. The exhibition highlights the Gallery's acquisitions over the past decade with works from Australia, Asia, the Pacific, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and North, South and Central America alongside a series of ambitious commissions, key loans and interactive works for children.

www.21cblog.com is an expanded platform and online source book that gathers reference material, artist contributions and contextual information on works and projects included in the exhibition, complemented by a forthcoming series of feature contributions by curators, writers and artists. Guest contributors from December 2010 to April 2011 include: Negar Azimi, Mark Fisher, Marina Fokidis, Andrew Frost, Gridthiya Gaweewong, Ghassan Hage, Barbad Golshiri, Jens Hoffman, Ranjit Hoskote, Rose Issa, Lisette Lagnado, Marcia Langton, Angela Ndalianis, Andrew Maerkle, Amanda McDonald Crowley, Adriano Pedrosa, Michael Smith and Tom Vanderbilt.
