press release

The Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Bologna continues its programme Coming Soon MAMbo + Museum – Exhibitions with the first solo show in an Italian museum of the American artist Trisha Donnelly (San Francisco, 1974). Exploring the multiple facets of a contemporary museum, this series of monographic exhibitions focusing on the emerging artistic scene marks the imminent relocation of the Galleria d'Arte Moderna to its new home in the Ex Forno del Pane, where on 5 May 2007, will open MAMbo – Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna.

Trisha Donnelly’s show, conceived specifically for the spaces of Bologna’s Gallery of Modern Art, consists of a series of new works linked by a network of reciprocal interactions. The works will be displayed in an apparently casual fashion on the second floor of the gallery, placed around the central hall in the natural light from the skylight. For Trisha Donnelly, the very idea of an exhibition means a gradual erosion of nature and of expectations, so that real experience is transformed through the observer’s discovery of the potential horizons of the work.

Trisha Donnelly’s videos, drawings, installations, photographs, sound art and “demonstrations” occupy the exhibition space in an almost imperceptible way, becoming the departure point for parallel narratives. Based on word games or simulations, the artist’s works, without being announced or recorded, either lead to an “elsewhere” that is left up to the imagination of the spectator, or look to a future that is indicated but never fully revealed. In her research, Trisha Donnelly investigates both the way in which we build our structures of thought, and the mystery of the relationship between artistic experience and reality, knowledge and imagination, the real and the fantastic.

A monographic catalogue will be published in conjunction with the exhibition, which alongside the curator’s introduction will include an in-depth discussion between the American critic Bruce Hainley and the French critic and curator Stéphanie Moisdon.

The exhibition is part of Coming Soon MAMbo + Museum - Exhibitions Concept by Gianfranco Maraniello and Andrea Viliani Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Bologna, Piazza Costituzione 3, Bologna
