Sunil Gupta's autobiographical photographs are both political and intimate. This exhibition comprises two series, for a total of some 30 works. Social Security (1988) narrates the story of the family's move from India and settlement in Canada. Using family photographs and his mother's words, Gupta elucidates the immigrant experience. Homelands (2001–03) presents large-scale colour images. Born in New Delhi and raised in Montreal, Gupta conjoins the landscapes, traditions, and cultures of East and West, exploring the historical past, the political present, and the fluidity of place that together define his current existence.
Organized by the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography.
