press release

Copenhagen’s five kunsthalles, Den Frie Udstillingsbygning, Kunstforeningen GL STRAND, Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Nikolaj Kunsthal and Overgaden – Institut for Samtidskunst, are presenting 41 artistic positions in the form of one joint exhibition.

The heading for the exhibition is trust – trust in one another and trust in art’s way of making us see the wellknown in a new perspective. Through a multitude of aesthetic idioms, the aim of the exhibition is to create renewed interest in art as an important space for reflection and as way of sensing and making sense of the world. As a result TRUST is formulated around the city and its scenography of well-known institutions – for instance, the shop, the church, the castle – just as everyday life and everyday objects form a consistent strand running through the exhibition. As an extension of this, each of the five institutions has been assigned a name that functions as a subtitle for the individual exhibition and refers to the institution’s special history and identity. TRUST can also be experienced at Nørgaard Paa Strøget, Roma’s Pizza & Burger House, The Lake Radio and Vester Vov Vov.
TRUST is curated by Sonia Dermience.

The exhibition at Overgaden puts emphasis on exchange and collaboration. Previously a workers’ restaurant and a printing house, Overgaden was turned into an exhibition space on the initiative of a fashion designer and is today an important platform for the experimental arts as well as a forum for discussion and debate.

All these historical and present identities and functions are touched upon in the exhibition in the shape of crafts, design, performance, talks and printed matter. The participating artists work primarily cross-media and their works exhibit different aspects of the dialogue between artistic practices, between cultures and between the artwork and the viewer.

The works combined outline the contours of a ritualistic mythology that raises questions of modern nomadic life, industrial and artistic production conditions, and about the way in which the individual and the collective, the material and the spiritual interchange in our contemporary global landscape.
