press release

Incisions on the canvas, spattered paint, hand prints left on picture planes--mainstream images of postwar art often involve the principle of causality, bearing vivid traces of physical activities or raw materials. This exhibition tries to shed new light on the postwar development of art in Japan and Western countries, giving the name "trace" to the images that were generated as the consequences of something, rather than designed to resemble something.
