press release

We are proud to present Tobias Bernstrup´s first solo show at the gallery. Tobias Bernstrup, b.1970, lives and works in New York. He graduated from the Royal Academy in Stockholm 1998 and his work has recently been seen in solo exhibitions at Cosmic Galerie, Paris (2004), Museum für Gegenwartskunst Basel (2003), Palais de Tokyo, Paris and Färgfabriken, Stockholm (2002) and the Lyon Biennial (2001).

His new work, XSEED 4000, is an interactive animation. Its constructed environment is inspired by the tallest projected building in the world (not yet completed). The building was designed to be built on water in the Tokyo bay at a height of 4000 metres, consisting of a 6000 m wide steel construction and 800 floors. The tower would host over 1 million inhabitants and create an ecologically functional system with no air pollution. Taisei Corporation, who made the proposal, estimated a construction period of app. 30 years. Integrated in the landscape like a mountain, its conic shape would remind one that of Mount Fuji-Yama.

The player/viewer of the animated game can wander around in this utopian vision where surveillance, control and perfection echo a state of paranoia.

Tobias Bernstrup will also show works related to XSEED 4000 together with two video animations, Polygon Lover and Friedrich Passage, in the lobby and restaurant at Lydmar Hotel in Stockholm, Feb 26 -March 27. This marks the start of the collaboration between Lydmar and Andréhn-Schiptjenko as regard the hotel´s art programme.

On March 26, Tobias Bernstrup will do a performance at Moderna Museet, Stockholm.
