The Young Artists Biennial 2004

VISUAL POLICIES AND PRACTICES / CODES AND IDENTITIES / THE VIOLENCE OF THE IMAGE / THE IMAGE OF VIOLENCE The META Cultural Foundation and the Goethe Institute of Bucharest are inviting you to participate in the opening of the first edition of The Young Artists Biennial, Bucharest 2004, which will take place between October 14 ­ November 12, 2004.

Starting as a regional project, the exhibition brings together the works of over 80 artists from Europe, America, Asia and Africa. The extensive geographical participation has been a natural outcome, following the development of the curatorial concept towards the ³transcendence of regional identifying policies² and the deconstruction of clichés that relate violence to this geographical area. Visual Codes and Identities. The Violence of the Image / The Image of Violence is the title proposed by the 2META group ­ the curators of the exhibition. Exploring the violence of the image relative to the object and the escape of the visual from visual arts and of identity from excessively identifying discourses, the exhibition aims less at the representation / image of violence and more at the violence of the image as metaphor / sign / structure. Most works employ media languages (photo, digital print, video-art, and net-art).

The opening will take place on Thursday, October 14, 18.00 at the Gallery of the C_rture_ti Bookshop, 13 Arthur Verona St., Bucharest. The exhibition takes place at the following venues: The Museum of Romanian Literature, The Romanian Architects¹ Order/Delta Design, H¹Art Gallery, UNA Gallery, Posibila Gallery, HT003 Gallery, HAG Gallery, 2Meta Gallery, The International Airport “Henri Coand_², Club Twice, Green Hours, Amsterdam Grand Café, Toaca Studio / International Center for Contemporary Art, Goethe Institute and Hungarian Cultural Center.

Prior to the opening, the Goethe Institute (22 Henri Coand_ St.) will host the international symposium Visual Policies and Practices. Codes and Identities. Between October 14 ­ October 16, over 30 directors of cultural centers and museums, directors and editors of specialized publications, curators and artists will discuss the interaction between visual culture and the cross-cultural dynamics of South-Eastern Europe, as well as the former¹s social impact and role in shaping reception. The theoretical sessions will focus on the following issues: ³Visual Identity and Visual Culture ­ moderator: Werner Meyer, director, Kunsthalle Göppingen Keynote speaker: René Block, curator, director, Kunsthalle Fridericianum Kassel «Visual Turn» and the Democratization of Culture ­ moderator: Ami Barak, curator, president of the International Association of Curators, Department of Cultural Projects, City Council of Paris. Practices of Looking. Images, Representations, Ideologies ­ moderator: Viktor Misiano, curator, art critic, and editor-in-chief of Moscow Art Magazine Keynote speaker: Steven Gartside, PhD, Centre for the Study of Location, Memory and Visuality MIRIAD
