The Urban Condition

From 1 April up to and including 22 October 2006, Museum De Paviljoens in Almere presents the exhibition De stedelijke conditie / The Urban Condition. In the exhibition artists and designers imagine, investigate and comment on the urban environment. They reflect on the urban space: on the one hand, they look at the specific characteristics of Almere; on the other, they explore the meaning of the phenomenon of the city in a broader context: what is it that makes a city urban?

De stedelijke conditie / The Urban Condition shows work by Lonnie van Brummelen, Siebren de Haan, Manuel Graf, Jonas Dahlberg, Jakob Kolding, Gabriel Lester, Michal Moravčík, Ira Koers, Rebecca Sakoun, Lucia Nimcová, Sabine Bitter & Helmut Weber, Joes Koppers & Susann Lekås and Niels Schrader.

The exhibition also features the Almere Collection, with works and installations by Bik van der Pol, Carsten Höller, Marin Kasimir and Sabine Bitter & Helmut Weber.

As the youngest and fastest-growing city of the Netherlands, Almere knows a special form of urban planning. The planned city, designed on the drawing board, the so-called ‘New Town’ par excellence, conceived as spacious, and viewed by many as a collection of suburbs. The city celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2006. At this moment, a completely new city centre is being built in Almere, based on a master plan designed by Rem Koolhaas’s Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA).
