press release

Christopher Grimes Gallery is pleased to present a group painting show curated by Katharina Grosse that includes work by Benjamin Butler, Ingrid Calame, Bernd Mechler, Judy Millar, Bernd Ribbeck, and Christine Streuli.

The Devil's Punchbowl, brings together six artists that have taken an active part in the recent discussion of painterly practice. Grosse’s aim in presenting artists with different understandings and interpretations of painting is to render categories such as abstract, referential, and figurative inconsequential, therefore revealing that the meaning of a painter’s investigation of the medium lies beyond these labels. Working from different positions and in different codes, the artists and their work coincide at an unexpected junction revealing the self-generative nature of painting.

About the curator: Katharina Grosse’s radical approach to painting is in a constant state of evolution. Evoking the spontaneity of common street graffiti with the sensibility of the modern colorist, Grosse’s application is assertive and her palette bold. She explores consistency, transparency, and contrast of color while experimenting with technique and painting gestures in both her site-specific works and her works on canvas. Born in Freiburg/Breisgau, Germany in 1961, Grosse lives and works in Berlin. Institutions throughout the world have commissioned her to create site-specific works. This will be the first exhibition she has curated for the Christopher Grimes Gallery
