LAST CALL

Ein Flughafen ist ein ebenes Gebiet, auf dem Flugzeuge landen und starten können, meistens mit fester Landebahn, einem Kontrollturm, Hangars, Flugzeugwartung und Tankstellen sowie Unterkünften für Passagiere und Lagerräumen für Fracht. Aber ein Flughafen ist weit mehr als das, ein Flughafen ist ein Sammelsurium aller Kulturen – ein Ort von fließenden Körpern, Menschen, die in der Schwebe sind, ein Ort, an dem alle warten, um woanders hinzugelangen, ein Ort voller Gegensätze. Es ist ein Non- Place. Es ist tote Zeit. Er ist der ultimative Warteraum. Dennoch ist er ein Zentrum heutiger Kultur. Ein Flughafen ist durchaus ein Ort, an dem die Identität genauer unter die Lupe genommen wird, wie die Schuppen einer Schlangenhaut. Heutzutage bestehen die meisten Flughäfen aus großen Terminals, in denen man unglaublich viele Sachen machen kann, mal abgesehen vom Fliegen. Flughäfen sind nicht bloß eine Station für Passagiere, die meisten sind unglaubliche architektonische Gebäude – eine neue Art von Gebäude zwischen einem Bahnof Station und einem Einkaufszentrum. Es hat etwas von einer großen Stadt außerhalb einer normalen Stadt. Es ist der erste und letzte Blick auf eine Stadt, ein Gebiet oder ein Land. Flughäfen sind ein Ort, an dem man Menschen aus aller Welt treffen kann. Diese Ausstellung richtet ihr Augenmerk auf die Flughäfen Tegel und Schönefeld, die ihrem Ende (LAST CALL) entgegensehen.

LAST CALL

An airport is a tract of levelland where aircrafts land and take off, usually equipped with hard-surfaced landing strips, a control tower, hangars, aircraft maintenance and refueling facilities, as well as accommodations for passengers and cargo. Airports are public and busy spaces, they are the most complex and dynamics station owed to the importance of the air traffic in our times. But an airport is much more than that. An airport is a conglomeration of all cultures, it is a place of floating bodies of people in limbo, a place where everyone is waiting to be somewhere else, it is a place of contradictions. It is a so called "No-Land", where dead time seems constantly present. An airport is the ultimate waiting room. And yet, it is a center of contemporary culture, a place where identity is scrutinized thoroughly, and also shed like a snakeskin. We become anonymous and homogeneous. Nowdays most of the airports are big terminals where we can do a lot of things instead of flying in or out of. Airports are not only a station for passengers, with most of them being amazing architectural buildings, they are a new kind of building, something in between a station and a mall. Like big cities outside a normal city. The first and last view of such city, area, or country. Airports are places where people from everywhere can meet. This Exhibition focusses on Tegel and Schönefeld, the two berlin airports which soon will have their LAST CALL and will disappear.
