SUMMER GROUP EXHIBITION

Daniel Hug is pleased to present a summer group exhibition comprised of ten artists. Each of these artists work in traditional media, yet have managed to create conceptually concise work reaching beyond mere formal gestures. Patterson Beckwith fashions staged photographs out of cigarette smoke and soap bubbles. Through the use of such simple means materials, Beckwith recreates tongue-in-cheek modernist compositions found in early 20th century experimental photography, while providing a sly commentary on art itself. Hanna-Mari Blencke’s self-portrait painting, Lindsay Brant’s drawing of herself, and the two silkscreen works of Anna Parkina which contain fragmented photos of herself, all employ self-portraiture as a means to convey more than just a memory of one’s likeness. Similarly, Hansjoerg Dobliar’s painting appears to address the neo-formalist tendencies of today’s abstraction, but actually reveals an acidic Germanic mountain-scape covered in rays of light. Andreas Hofer’s series of twelve framed drawings shows his fascination with American superheroes and villains, possibly illustrating a Nitzschean Supermensch or an reflection from his youth. Chris Lipomi presents three almost identical paintings of a medieval stockade addressing the Warholian celebration of the banal. Thom Merrick has balanced two paint-covered Chinese porcelain deities on four-by-four wooden posts, literally balancing them between portraiture and landscape painting. Markus Selg’s large-scale computer generated canvas transform the digital medium from an everyday utilitarian aesthetic, conveying his interest in ornamentation. Thomas Zipp’s small-scale installation combines a painting of an abstracted face together with two framed Xeroxes of found portraits, continuing his recontextualization of art historical imagery.

Patterson Beckwith was Born in 1972 in Pittsburg, PA. He received his BFA from Coopoer Union and his MFA from UCLA in 2006. His most recent solo exhibition was at American Fine Arts in New York.

Hanna-Mari Blencke was in born in 1976 in Erlangen, Germany. She studied at UIAH in Heilsinki, Finland and at the HFG in Karlsruhe, Germany. Her most recent solo exhibition was at Galerie Christine Mayer in Munich, Germany.

Lindsay Brant was born in 1973 in New York. She received a BA from Yale University and an MFA from the Art Center of Design in Pasadena, CA. Her most recent solo exhibition was at Haswellediger & Co. in New York.

Hansjoerg Dobliar was born in 1970 in Ulm, Germany. He studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Kuenste Munich. His most recent solo exhibition was at Galerie Ben Kaufmann, Berlin.

Andreas Hofer was born in 1963 in Munich, Germany. He studied at the AdBK in Munich, Germany. His most recent solo show was at Hauser & Wirth in London.

Chris Lipomi was born in 1975 in Miami, Florida. He received his MFA from UCLA and his BFA from San Francisco Art Institute. His most recent solo exhibition was at Daniel Hug, Los Angeles.

Thom Merrick was born in 1963 in Sacramento, CA. He studied at the San Francisco Art Institute. His most recent solo exhibition was at the Kunsthalle Goeppingen, Germany. His work was presented at Documenta 9 in Kassel, Germany.

Anna Parkina was born in Moscow in 1979. She has studied at the L’Ecole des Beaux-Art, Paris and Art Center College of Design, Pasadena. Her most recent solo exhibition was at Haswellediger & Co. in New York.

Markus Selg was born in 1974 in Singen, Germany. He studied at the Hochschule fuer Bildende Kuenste in Hamburg and Akademie Isotrop in Hamburg. His most recent solo exhibition was at the Oldenburger Kunstverein in Oldenburg, Germany.

Thomas Zipp was born in 1966 in Heppenheim, Germany. He studied at the Slade School of Art, London and at the Staedelschule in Frankfurt, Germany. His most recent solo exhibition was at Harris Lieberman in New York.
