press release

Twenty-nine prints presenting the vocabulary of images in the sculptural work of Stephan Balkenhol (b. 1957, Germany). Balkenhol’s painted over, figurative wooden sculptures -human figures and animal images aligned with the German tradition of wood sculpture -constituted a breakthrough in figurative sculpture of the 1990s.In his present artist’s book Balkenhol has chosen to place his images alongside a text by the philosopher and essayist Emile Cioran (1911, Rumania - 1995, France). Cioran’s aphorisms, such as “The task of a solitary man is to be even more solitary,” have filtered into Balkenhol’s human figures - empathy rousing anti-heroic images of “everyman.”

The artist’s book has been published through the initiative of Harel Printers and Publishers, and is presented with their courtesy.
