press release

Sophie Calle is a writer, narrative artist, photographer, film-maker and sometimes even a detective. She is undeniably a bit of everything and switches roles according to the character she is playing, the rituals she invents and the part of her life she is narrating. Her work usually consists of an association of photographs and text, and she often works withquestionnaires. Sophie Calle puts herself at the centre of her artistic productions, thereby mixing her personal life with her artistic project. She makes up the rules as she goes along so as to “improve life” and give it structure and meaning.

Sophie Calle presents 'herself' at the Centre for Fine Arts in a retrospective of works of art representing her life. The exhibition is arranged chronologically and comprises twenty autobiographical projects. An audio-guide leads visitors round the exhibition and tells the story of Sophie Calle's life, which she stages in such a way that it becomes a legend, a fictitious 'tale'.

Sophie Calle was born in 1953 and lives and works in Paris. In 2004 she had a solo exhibition at the Beaubourg entitledM’as-tu vue. She represented France at the Biennale di Venezia in 2007 and was also invited by the Artistic Coordinator to show her work in the international pavilion. Sophie Calle presented the exhibition Prenez soin de vous both at the Biennale and at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
