press release

Resourcefulness and enterprise have been fundamental in the development of the University’s Permanent Collection, from the initial funding application to Northern Arts for matching funds in the 1970s, which enabled astute purchases, mainly of contemporary prints, to its current holding of over 300 works by artists of national and international distinction.

Many of the artists represented have been associated with the University Gallery through its temporary and touring exhibitions, whereas other works namely the Henrietta Rae, the Frank Bramley, Albert Ludovici and John Simmonds have been acquired through bequests and long-term loans from the Gallery’s benefactors and patrons. However, the University’s unique collection of paintings by Norman Cornish, the gift of the artist, represents the largest public collection of the artist’s work in the UK.

This exhibition is therefore an overview of a collection which is a feast of works from the 19th century onwards and includes in no chronological order a marvellous Lucian Freud, a Sickert, a Pryde and an early Sean Scully. Other notable works highlight the region’s strong artistic and educational influences through artists of international distinction including Victor Pasmore, Kenneth Rowntree, Ian Stephenson, Richard Kidd and Bill Peronneau.
