A subtle, pink filter on the gallery’s windows sets the tone of the exhibition on several levels: literally, as it floods the room in flesh-coloured light, and metaphorically, hinting at a general preoccupation with the body and all its connotations – including those of flesh, tissue, body, membranes, motor functions and desire.

The exhibition will include a major video installation as well as a number of sculptures and other interventions.

The exhibition title, Start Begging, frames the various oppositions and power plays which the works establish: between object and image, between camera and body, between different materialities – and possibly even between work and viewer.

The x-room is SMK’s platform for contemporary art where international artists are invited to show new works created especially for this space. The works of this exhibition are produced in collaboration with the Swiss Institute, New York.

The exhibition is on view 29 August – 29 December 2019.
