press release

The exhibition of Rosemarie Trockel´s work to be hosted by BUNKIER SZTUKI has been produced in collaboration with the IFA Foundation (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen in Stuttgart) and constitutes a part of the IFA project to stage solo exhibitions of the most renowned German artists. Apart from presenting the artist’s contribution to the discourse on modern art in which other eminent German artists – mainly men (Gerhard Richter, George Baselitz and Sigmar Polke) – participate, the exhibition will also provide an opportunity to witness Trockel’s efforts to outweigh male dominance on the German art scene. Her strategy is to contrast the image of a genius artist with traditional female social roles. Though her works can be classified in various ways, they are all a distinct expression of her feminist artistic stand and a continual uncompromising criticism of the dominant system in art. This does not, however, rob them of freshness and impact, the intellectual load is softened by irony and humour, dogmatism and angry polemics are not there. Traditional and new media that Trockel uses in her work invite viewers to develop a very personal attitude towards her art. This is especially true of dip pen, charcoal, collage or computer drawings that form a large part of Trockel’s work. Drawings accompany every stage of her artistic life, as drafts, sketches but also – which is particularly evident in her latest, large-format works – as an independent artistic "organism". That is why, beside video art, the exhibition focuses on drawing. Pressetext
