press release

Rosa Loy’s paintings and works on paper in her second exhibition at Entwistle, engage with themes of coincidence, chance encounters, the exchange of news and information, and the slippage between the familiar and the unfamiliar.

Naratives have always been central to Loy’s figurative compositions, but the nature of the exchanges between her fairytale-like figures remains precariously balanced on the cusp of this world and some other, nebulous one. Consequently, her paintings never fail to beguile the viewer with their alluring yet elusive botanical impossibilities, surrealistic juxtapositions, and fanciful appropriation of vernacular Germanic mythology.

Rosa Loy was born and educated in what was communist East Germany. Soon after the Berlin Wall came down Loy made her first of many visits to Italy, where she was profoundly impressed by quattrocento wall painting. This led her to experiment with different media, finally choosing casein – pigment mixed with milk protein – as the staple of her painting practice. Loy has since become a key figure in east European painting which has gained an impressive international reutation since the late 90s.

Rosa Loy was born in Zwickau, Germany and currently lives and works in Leipzig where she is part of the city’s flourishing contemporary art scene.
