press release

A pioneering debut exhibition from the Düsseldorf Academy of Art is to be shown for the first time abroad at ALBION. RO’MA, from MKM (Duisburg), is the first collaborative project between artists Rosemarie Trockel and Marcus Lüpertz, whose artistic approaches are entirely distinct from one another. The contemporary art scene in Düsseldorf derives much of its energy from the presence of the world renowned Düsseldorf Art Academy, at which both artists are highly regarded professors. RO’MA provides a platform on which Trockel and Lüpertz’s paintings and sculptures will contest entirely alternative conceptions of art and monitor the force and effect of the polar opposite works on one another. The fact that the two artists/professors teach together provides an interesting context in which to place both them and their artwork and acts as a further reflection of their disparity and the unusual nature of the exhibition.

RO’MA is devoted to two entirely diverse approaches to art. Trockel’s work is the embodiment of conceptualism and the expression of an idea. She is of the school of Marcel Duchamp, whereby art instigates an intellectual conversation and dialogue and concerns itself with sociology, behavioural research and psychoanalysis.

Lüpertz’s work embodies pure euphoric painting and sculpture with a very masculine and rough handling. His expressive aesthetic principles align him to German Expressionism and to the work of Anselm Kiefer, Jörg Immendorf and Georg Baselitz. Lüpertz paints in an objective style, employing traditional motifs of landscapes, still lifes and the figurative, but alienates them in unusual and surprising manners.
