press release

The failure of peace and love has led us to The End of Days. Our messengers decipher the cryptic symbols From the History of our World: "The prophecies of Death's encroaching grasp on all sentient beings Is at hand." The apocalypse will leave only a few... Adam? Eve? Afloat, a ship of fools screams obscenities into the black sky. Memories of the past flash by: "Is it tomorrow or just the end of time?"...

LOOK INTO THE RAYS OF THE NEW SOLAR SUN RISING.

Markus Winter Gallery is proud to announce the exhibition and collaborative work of three American artists: Robert Davis and Michael Langlois with Rashid Johnson. The Chicago collaborative duo, Davis/Langlois, have invited Rashid Johnson of New York to participate in their most recent work, Look Into The Rays Of The New Solar Sun Rising.

The exhibition is an overwhelming sensory interplay between sculpture, painting and installation. Through references as disparate as Led Zeppelin, Max Klinger, Leroi Jones, Henry David Thoreau, and the failed utopian movement of the 60's and 70's, the artists have created a dynamic environment, oscillating between reality and the surreal, sanity and a psychedelic state of mind.

Davis (b. 1970) and Langlois (b. 1974) met in 1997 at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and have worked together ever since. Their multi-layered pieces aim to challenge the viewer and remove the ego of the artist from the work itself. Their work uses sub-cultural imagery, moral ambiguity, and tension between surface beauty and the darkness that lies beneath.

Rashid Johnson (b. 1977) also studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Johnson's art focuses on the cultural dialog of racial identities. He is known for his fearless and ironic reworking of stereotypes and icons.

Davis/Langlois and Johnson have previously shown together at Liste, the young art fair in Basel, Switzerland; Monique Meloche Gallery, Chicago; ChangingRole and Galerie404, Naples, Italy; DCKT Gallery, New York; and the Museum Of Contemporary Art, Chicago.
