press release

Richard Wilson is one of Britain's most distinctive artists, exhibiting site-specific sculpture and inspired architectural inventions. Irons in the Fire will show Wilson's sketchbooks, drawings and maquettes to reveal the complex workings behind his deceptively simple works.

Richard Wilson is internationally celebrated for a career spanning more than twenty years exhibiting inspired architectural interventions and site specific sculpture.

Wilson has achieved both critical and popular acclaim for works such as 20:50, a sea of reflective sump oil permanently installed in the Saatchi Collection, described by art critic Andrew Graham Dixon in the BBC series The History of British Art as 'one of the masterpieces of the modern age'.

Set within an installation of filing cabinets and shelving units specifically modified by the artist, Irons in the Fire uses the artist's sketchbooks, drawings and maquettes to reveal the complex workings behind Wilson's often deceptively elegant works.

The exhibition features more than 20 projects ranging from the seminal works 20:50, She came in through the bathroom window, and Not too Clear on the Viewfinder, to recent major works such as Over Easy and Set North for Japan. Many significant works are included that have never been exhibited previously. These range from the original concept model for 20:50 - made from a Portuguese shoe box on a family holiday - to the preparatory works for unrealised works and major new works that are currently in development.
