It was an interest in the international network, and more particularly the work of young artists, that lay behind the 2002 exhibition Rendez-Vous at Lyon's Musée d'Art Contemporain. This event confirmed the museum as one of the most active in Europe for showcasing the work of "emerging" artists. As a result of its success, the Musée d'Art Contemporain and the local Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts decided to repeat the experiment, in collaboration with the Institut d'Art Contemporain in neighbouring Villeurbanne.

Young artists, new media, new modes of exhibition: how is eclecticism to be handled? Because contemporary art is in a constant state of self-questioning, Rendez-Vous is intended as a mine in which to discover emerging forms of aesthetic expression; and it brings together (though without any pretensions to exhaustiveness) works that are representative of current aesthetic experimentation in a variety of forms. Rendez-Vous 2004 will be at the Musée d'Art Contemporain from 17 September to 28 October 2004. It will include original pieces by nineteen young artists from the regional and international scenes, working with sound, performance, installations and video, or again drawing and photography.

These artists are : Nevin Aladag (Germany), Christian Andersen (Switzerland), Micol Assaël (Italy), Heike Aumüller (Germany), Gilles Balmet (France), Sylvie Barré (France), Laetitia Carton (France), Chimène Dennel (France), Dirk Fleischmann (Germany), Alexander Gutke (Sweden), Chourouck Hriech (France), Florentine Lamarche (France), Virginie Litzler (France), Stani Michiels (Belgium), Pratchaya Phinthong (Germany), Royal Art Lodge (Canada), Olivier Stevenart (Belgium), Christophe Terlinden (Belgium) and Roselyne Titaud (France).

The exhibition thus aspires to perceptual diversity, with a broad-based artistic team comprising a museum, an art school, an art centre, a critic… Promotion of, and support for, young creative artists make this new exhibition a field of experimentation that is open to reflection and enquiry about the contemporary art world.

Exhibition Curators : Isabelle Bertolotti, Curator at the Musée d'Art Contemporain, Lyon ; Hauviette Bethemont, art critic ; Dirk Snauwaert, Co-Director of the Institut d'Art Contemporain, Villeurbanne, and Director of Wiels, Centre d'Art Contemporain, Brussels ; Yves Robert, Director of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Lyon. General Curatorship : Musée d'Art Contemporain, Lyon

The exhibition is produced by the Musée d'Art Contemporain, Lyon, along with the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Lyon, and the Institut d'Art Contemporain, Villeurbanne, with financial support from the Rhône-Alpes region.
