press release

Phil Collins’ photographic and video work seeks to undermine the stereotyping of people, places and cultures, which he identifies as characteristic of areas of conflict and change. His work is typified by a casual informality of approach and direct social engagement with individuals and communities. In the spirit of a seasoned news reporter or war artist, he has travelled to destinations which are social flash points and where the fabric of the community is tested to the full, e.g. Belfast, Kosovo, Serbia, Baghdad and Palestine. At MK-G, Collins presents his most comprehensive exhibition to date in a British public gallery. It comprises some of his latest video and photographic projects, including a work newly purchased by the Tate, They Shoot Horses, getting its UK première at MK-G, together with a new commission, Fotolab, made specially for MK-G. This exhibition is due to tour to Firstsite, Colchester, Kunsthalle, St.Gallen, Glynn Vivian Gallery, Swansea, and The National Gallery, Tirana.
