press release

Peter Welz is known for his kinetic investigations of the sculptural body. This multi-channel video installation resulted froom a collaboration with Frankfurt-based choreographer William Forsythe.

For this multi-channel video installation, Forsythe transcribed a piece of text by Samuel Beckett into a solo dance performance. Welz recorded the performance with cameras placed to the side, above, and in front of Forsythe as he danced, as well as with cameras attached to his wrists. The five views are shown simultaneously on multiple screens. In addition to the video installation, Welz studied the footage frame by frame to create the Airdrawing series, a collection of gestural drawings that map Forsythe's different hand placements, arm movements, and leg positioning in creating his solo dance.

Peter Welz is a Berlin-based artist and was artist-in-residence at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin in 2003-04. He won the Kaiser Ring Scholarship from the Mönchehaus Museum for Modern Art in Goslar Germany.

William Forsythe is "one of the world's leading choreographers" (John Tusa, BBC interview, February 2003.) He led Ballett Frankfurt for twenty years before starting his own company in January 2005.

Peter Welz will participate in a discussion with Hamza Walker from 5 to 6 pm. The exhibit will be open from September 18 to October 30. The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public.
