press release

We are pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Peter Jap Lim, who is known for his colourful and multilayered ink paintings. In this new series of paintings, sculptures and drawings, he combines his painterly drawing method with the written word and focuses on the interaction between speech and space. Just as in ‘Bon Mots’, Jap Lim uses wit, irony and distortion of semantics when de-contextualizing phrases or merging different clichés into an apparently new one. These phrases are not ends in themselves; they seem to look for another sense, even for another substance. In his hands they are both virtual objects shaped out of ‘language matter’ and tangible constructs of colour and paper. As objects in their own right they are sometimes ambiguous, comic and even poetic. Also on show is a mini series of sculptures, which Jap Lim aptly calls riders. As with most of his works on paper the main medium is very colour intense calligraphy ink, which in this series has been mixed with acrylic binder. The riders embody an extension of the idea conveyed in his last exhibition: that painting can transcend dimensionality. Here, two monochrome painted surfaces interrelate. Firstly through the emergence of a spatial object from the crumpling and flow of surfaces and secondly, because the colour of one side bleeds into the colour of the other. Both approaches are clearly comprehensible and entice the observer into an effortless visual approach to the object and to space. The third part of the exhibition is a series of ten abstract drawings titled Riding A Rising Horizon. Each is a variation on a primarily graphical composition with subtle colouration. Peter Jap Lim, who is of German Indonesian/Chinese origin, was born and raised in Germany. Since 2003 he has been living and working in Berlin. The Horizon Is Your Horse is his second solo show in London and he has exhibited widely throughout Germany and Europe. His work has featured in group exhibitions including: Fate of irony, KAI 10, Duesseldorf, Germany, 2010, accompanied by a catalogue published by Kerber Art; Trans-Video Express, Sara Meltzer Gallery, New York, 2007; Jap Lim’s work is included in the Julia Stoschek Collection. The Horizon is Your Horse is our fourth exhibition in London and is taking place in a former butchers shop on Pimlicos Tachbrook Street Market. We will be open to the public from 1 June to 30 June 2012, Tuesday to Saturday 12-7pm.
