Peter Hujar

Peter Hujar is one of the most important and influential New York photographers of the 1970s and 1980s, an artist whose reputation has steadily grown since his death in 1987. Working exclusively in black and white, Hujar vividly documented a city that has been all but lost to us today—its streets, architecture, nightlife, and demimonde. His portraits—of well-known figures such as Susan Sontag, Andy Warhol, and William Burroughs, his nudes, and photographs of animals—are highly regarded. Hujar was a contemporary and friend of Diane Arbus, both were admirers of Weegee and share his graphic, direct, dark vision. Hujar’s influence on Robert Mapplethorpe and Nan Goldin is undeniable. A classicist, his style echoes further back to figures such as Atget and Brassai. This exhibition will be organized more as a monographic show rather than as a retrospective, primarily centered around photographs that have never before been exhibited or reproduced.
