PAUL McCARTHY - myths with a grotesque twist For the first time, more than 50 of the artist's films and videos have been gathered in a retrospective exhibition. Many of the works have never previously been shown. Paul McCarthy (1945) is known for breaching taboos in his art. He uses familiar myths and narratives, such as Heidi or Pinocchio. In his version of these stories we are confronted with a grotesque, violent subconsciousness, normally hidden behind the laughing mask or the clown's visage; the existential dread underlying social conventions and the bourgeois facade.
