press release

In the current climate of increasingly sophisticated imaging technologies, hyper-mediation and virtual realities, artists are reconsidering notions of the picture as a vital interface with a changing world.

The exhibition’s focus is a generation of British Columbia artists who have demonstrated an energetic commitment to exploring the possibilities of paint. Matthew Brown, Arabella Campbell, Tim Gardner, Holger Kalberg, Elizabeth McIntosh, Charlie Roberts and Etienne Zack represent this contemporary wave. Featured works by artists Jessica Stockholder and Peter Schuyff, who ventured outside Canada in the 1980s to establish outstanding careers on the international stage, lend context to this new energy. Selections from the permanent collection of the Vancouver Art Gallery and several regional museums contribute to an overview of the defining achievements of B.C. painters in preceding decades.

The exhibition will be accompanied by an illustrated publication edited by Monika Szewczyk, assistant curator, with contributions by Neil Campbell, Thomas Lawson, Elizabeth McIntosh, Michael Morris, Jessica Stockholder, Peter Schuyff and Scott Watson.
