Nora Schattauer views her own art as a kind of experimental project, undertaking in order to investigate the various properties of her chosen media. In her newest works Schattauer draws or paints with chemistry. The are in the field of tension between order and chaos, that develop between her salts and chemicals. "The pouring of the solutions into the fine fibres and minuscule tubes of the paper creates specific patterns. They are curious constructs, reminiscent of cells, cellular division, the petals of flowers, eggs structures see under the microscope. Where there is contact, something moves on the seam between the two substances, there is a reaction between them. In interacting with one another they become alive. A transformacion takes place as a result of the contact. As in relationships, structures of influence, infiltration and change appear to develop".

Schattauers works are so magical, that they seem to paint themselves! Tiny drops of the clear water-based solutions of alkaline salt, copper sulphate, ammonium dihydrogenphosphate and other salts onto chemically prepared filter paper take on a life of their own as they slowly bloom into vibrant abstract compositions reminiscent of cellular constructs and biochemical samples from a scientific laboratory.
