press release

After the performance "A Great Circle#4" aboard a grand tour bus that traveled through the streets of the city, Monitor Gallery is proud to present Nico Vascellari's solo show. The new works of the artist, aside from the use of various materials of performance, sculpture, design and collage, are a reinterpretation and personalization his asthetic approach to the fashion system analyzed through various patented magazines, jingle advertisements and high fashion catwalks. His process is meticulous and at the same time it is the compulsiveness of the work that becomes the key to reading the internal body of the works and of the show itself. In his works Vascellari secondly follows the logic of accumulation: A calligraphic design left out over night, outside, to be destroyed, thousands of images of Kate Moss found and collected throughout the past six years, slightly altered cutouts of all eyes found in the last Vogue America are obsessively replaced in the same position on top of empty white pages. The concept is magmatic, the exhibition starts directly with the invitation itself which is printed, then ripped and rewritten by hand by the artist himself, and will continue on the walls of the gallery, which will be continuously marked up and rewritten in the days preceding the opening. Reviews state that Vascellari is alive with an animalistic temperament that overflows with his everyday performances in life (A. Lissoni, Tema Celeste, n. 114), the performance that will take place on the night of the opening should be an amplification of this intimate gesture repeated many times in the loneliness of his room: it is apparently illogical, irrational but full of tension and extraordinary emotion.

Nico Vascellari (Vittorio Veneto, 1976), lives in New York.
