press release

Following the success of the ground-breaking New Work UK 98, the project returned in 1999 with an even greater number of applications. The format of NWUK is three complete exhibitions, chosen from open submission, with only a forty-eight hour turnaround between each show. Over 500 applications were received from artists, artist groups and curators.

The selectors for NWUK in 1999 were Rose Finn Kelcey (artist), John Chilver (artist and member of curating group UNIT), Bart de Baere (curator, SMAK Belgium), Sue Jones (Director, Chisenhale) and Darren Flook (curator, Chisenhale).

One of the key curatorial objectives of NWUK was to contribute to the current debate on the function of ‘opens’. NWUK was a national project, with a strong identity and relevance to younger artists and curators.

The 1999 exhibitions were:

NWUK 1: 7 – 11 July 1999 Trippa a Modo Mio – Artists include Norman Hogg, Marijke Steedman, Simon Wood

NWUK 2: 14 – 18 July 1999 Jasper Joffe

NWUK 3: 2 – 25 July 1999 The Natives are Restless - Artists include Sigalit Landau, Saskia Olde Wolbers
