MICHAEL BEUTLER

Der Bielefelder Kunstverein widmet dem künstlerischen Werk von Michael Beutler, der international mit raumgreifenden Bricolage-Installationen bekannt wurde, eine umfangreiche Überblicksausstellung. Beutler reagiert mit seinen Arbeiten zumeist auf die sozialen und architektonischen Strukturen der jeweiligen Ausstellungssituation, die als Produktionsstätte und Präsentationsort zugleich genutzt wird. Um die Module für seine Installationen zu produzieren, baut er zunächst eigene Maschinen und verarbeitet dann industriell gefertigte Materialien wie Papier, Metall, Holz oder Kunststoffe. Der Künstler bindet bei der Entstehung seiner Werke immer wieder auch Dritte ein. Dieser Zustand temporärer Ungewissheit und eine prozesshafte Werkentwicklung werden von ihm als produktiver Bestandteil seiner Arbeit begriffen. Die Bielefelder Ausstellung gibt erstmals einen Einblick in die unterschiedlichen Kontexte und Entstehungsprozesse seiner Projekte seit 2002. Außerdem werden das Ausstellen von Skulptur, die Möglichkeiten der künstlerischen Dokumentation und Vermittlung von ephemeren Projekten untersucht.

Michael Beutler, geboren 1976 in Oldenburg, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. Er studierte an der Staatlichen Hochschule für Bildende Künste Städelschule (Frankfurt am Main) und an der Glasgow School of Art (UK). Dem Künstler wurden bereits zahlreiche Einzelausstellungen unter anderem im Centre d’Art Contemporain Saint-Nazaire (FR) (2013), im ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe (2012) und der Kunsthalle Lingen (2011) gewidmet. Zuletzt nahm Beutler an Gruppenausstellungen im Museé d´Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (FR), dem Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei (RC) (beide 2013), dem Kunstmuseum Luzern (CH) (2012) und der Singapore Biennale (2011) teil. Der Bielefelder Kunstverein widmet dem Künstler eine umfassende Einzelausstellung über seine gesamte Ausstellungsfläche. Im September 2014 wird Michael Beutler ein raumgreifendes Projekt in der Kunsthalle Osnabrück realisieren.

As of the 10th May 2014, the Bielefelder Kunstverein is devoting a comprehensive survey exhibition to the work of Michael Beutler, who has become internationally known for his expansive bricolage installations. In his works, Beutler reacts primarily to the social and architectural structures of the respective exhibition situation, which is used as a location for production and presentation at one and the same time. To produce the modules for his installations, he first builds his own tools or »proto-machines«. They are used to process industrially-fabricated materials like paper, metal, wood or plastics. As his work takes shape, the artist repeatedly involves third parties in the working process too. This state of temporary uncertainty and processual development are understood by him as productive components in his work. The Bielefeld exhibition offers the first insight since 2002 into the various contexts and development processes of his projects. And in addition to this, exhibiting sculpture, the possibilities of artistic documentation and the communication of ephemeral projects will be investigated. One part of the exhibition, a site-specific installation in the courtyard of the Kunstverein, will be implemented before the opening. It can be already visited in the context of the museum’s night »Bielefelder Nachtansichten« on April 26, 2014.

Numerous solo exhibitions have featured this artist, among others at the Museum für Gegenwartskunst Basel (CH) (2014), the Centre d´Art Contemporain Saint-Nazaire (2013), the Karlsruhe ZKM|Centre for Art and Media (2012) and the Kunsthalle Lingen (2011). In recent times, Beutler has also participated in group exhibitions in the Museé d´Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (France), the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei (Taiwan) (both 2013), the Lucerne Museum of Art (Switzerland) (2012) and the Singapore Biennale (2011). The Bielefelder Kunstverein is devoting a comprehensive solo exhibition to the artist, which will occupy our entire exhibition space. Michael Beutler is planning a large-scale project in cooperation with the architect Etienne Desloux, on the occasion of the reopening of the Kunsthalle Osnabrück under its new guidance.

PUBLICATION: To mark the exhibition, a 28-page brochure will be published (German/English). Additionally, an extensive monograph is being prepared in cooperation with the Kunsthalle Osnabrück, the Verein zur Förderung von Kunst und Kultur am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz e.V. Berlin and other partners, which will be published in 2015.
