press release

MACRO al Mattatoio is the first museum in Rome to dedicate a large exhibition to contemporary artists coming from the Mediterranean area. This exhibition opens a new perspective on the most recent artistic works coming from such a complex system of nations and places.

Ever since antiquity, Rome has been a symbolic center for cultural and economic exchanges thanks to its geographically ideal position at the heart of the Mediterranean basin. Rome is (now) featuring its (renewed) role of international capital for arts and culture, (affirming) its position as a place of artistic and cultural encounter, echoing the relationship between East and West.

This exhibition offers to Mediterranean countries the opportunity to meet on an artistic level in order to aknowledge their identities and differences. This might bring the European public to overcome its eurocentric point of view through art by giving a new value to the works from other cultures, with all their potentialities and resources.

The curatorial team, composed by 10 international curators, chose artworks that could best represent the main tendencies of contemporary visual arts rather than promoting the artists coming from their own countries. The installation of the exhibition does not follow geographical or chronological criterias but rather freely displays the work of 45 artists coming from 19 different countries having sometimes critical political situations. The cultural nomadism characteristic of the artists coming from the Mediterranean area brings to the West a cultural richness exlating and unifying different artistic realities.

Works exhibited at Macro al Mattatoio, often using technology as a medium of expression, communicate through the universal language of art. In fact most of the works presented in this exhibition are videos or video-installation, however, this doesn’t exclude a bidimentional form of expressions as photography, drawing and painting. Some works of art even create new spaces through environmental installations.

The intention of this show is to give visibility to some of the most significant contemporary artistic trends that characterise a geographical area that is both extensive and full of contradictions. An area that is currently noted more for its critical aspects than for its cultural resources.
