The artist’s sculptures are not merely sculptures as such, but take up a position somewhere between sculpture, sketch, collage and object. They appear as 3D haiku’s that give insight into the artist’s private thoughts. Massimo Bartolini is considered as one of the most important Italian sculptors of his generation, but also creates performances, installations and video. His work is always based on the physical security of spaces or materials with which we are familiar. He subtly, atmospherically and even sensually charges this to the point where a twist occurs in the viewer’s perception, making him look at reality in an (emotionally) intensified way. The exhibition is a joint venture by the S.M.A.K. and the Fruitmarket Gallery (Edinburgh), where a different version of it will be seen in spring 2013.
