press release

Soon is the title of an exhibition in which Marijke van Warmerdam shows work that is characterised by 'a glance ahead'. These images raise expectations by drawing on the future. Soon is also a photo in which the state of being 'in bud' is emphasised by an elevated white surface. The image holds a promise, the promise of unfolding blossom. In Now this promise has been fulfilled, yet here too we see a moment in flux. In the work Coming up soon, the blossom has fallen from the tree and the cycle seems to have reached its conclusion, but here too an abstract white surface allows scope for the projection of a mental image — another step to take.

The digital film Imagine presents a wooden horse from a carrousel. It moves and people can sit on it, and these things make it more concrete. Marijke van Warmerdam brings it even closer to a real horse by adding a moonlit bridle path. Children grow up, mud pies become real pies, something green is still young. In the film Green the colour leads to what lies ahead of all young children: the future. For van Warmerdam and in her work, seeing takes place on two levels. She uses the neologism 'spirality' to express her concept of the combination of physical vision with a speculative aspect. Seeing is actually two sequential moments: what we see and what we think to see. The sculpture Spirality — a black-and-white rug in the shape of a spiral with an eyeball upon it — is an icon of the 'spirality' concept. Idealen is an inkjet print in which the magic wand expresses the expectation of how beautiful something could be. 'A glance ahead' in the present.
