press release

The Breeder is pleased to present Marianna Gioka’s solo exhibition. Her large scale gestural abstract paintings are constructed by consecutive layers of oil paint that are overlaid with a detailed mark making using ink.

Gioka’s work conveys the sequence and compression of time, space and place and simultaneously the artist’s engagement with history of abstract art. In her highly worked canvases, Marianna Gioka creates new narratives using lines, spirals and elements of a delirious mark making that reminds an opalescent landscape. The surface of her paintings is being built over weeks or even months on successive translucent layers and it has luminous warmth and spatial depth.

Gioka’s starting points are cosmic explosions and the universe where fragments of matter are leaving the traces of their irregular routes on the canvas. Through the polyphony of marks, Marianna Gioka’s work echoes the subconscious, the human psyche that even in a state of utmost rest is disrupted by random feelings, unsolicited thoughts and unexpected fears.Using conversely the time-aged materials of oil paint and ink on canvas, Gioka thereby creates precise metaphors about the complex nature of the human mind.

Marianna Gioka was born in Athens in 1980. This is her first solo exhibition with the gallery. Gioka has graduated from Athens school of Fine Arts, has studied at Pratt Institute in NY and now lives and works in Athens.
