Limuw: An Ode to the Sea

Limuw: An Ode to the Sea, featuring artists: Miya Ando, Jules de Balincourt, Graham Caldwell, Zoe Crosher, Bill Dewey, Kim Fisher, Kimberly Hahn, Emilie Halpern, Mary Heebner, Virginia McCracken, and Raymond Saá. Like an ode, the second annual exhibition at MCASB Satellite location at Hotel Indigo Santa Barbara, is in praise of, or dedicated to the sea. The title combines two references—limuw, the Chumash Indian translation of “in the sea,” and Chilean poet Pablo Neruda’s classic poem, Ode to the Sea—which capture our passionate, compelling relationship to this element of the natural world. An enduring source of inspiration for writers, poets, and visual artists, the sea in its placidity provides solace and in its swell brings tempest and ruin.

For the artists included in this exhibition, the sea remains a site of quiet contemplation, mystery, and wonder. Works contemplate maritime ecology, oceanography, and our current socio-political relationships to the sea; themes greatly influenced by the Chumash’s legacy. Through their art, Limuw artists ponder the limitless, eternal, and preternatural qualities of the ocean. Not quite a celebration or an elegy, this exhibition takes an existential view of the sea. In its placidity it provides solace and in its swell brings tempest and ruin. An enduring source of inspiration for writers, poets, and visual artists, our experience of the sea remains enigmatic and wondrous.
