Liam Wells & Tom Simmons

For ‘decentred | distributed improvisation’ Liam Wells & Tom Simmons will transform the Norwich Gallery into the hub of a networked space within which they will explore a series of de-centralised performances. They will install a digital system in the gallery that will facilitate the transfer and transformation of data streams between a number of remote partners. Interpreted material significances will be shared throughout the network at the physical spaces used by our partners and ourselves. The project builds on research undertaken into the transformation of material significances within performances based in digital systems. This project will allow our partners and n0media to extend their understandings of de-centralised performance and to explore the transformation of the gallery space through remote partnership. The project will contribute to the development of digital research and teaching at the Norwich School of Art & Design and the University of East Anglia.

Postgraduate students will be involved in the installation of the digital system and the gallery will be open to the public throughout the project.

Creative relationships have been established with the University of East Anglia, the Slade School of Fine Art London and the Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan Stockholm. Particular skills have been sought in coding, performance practice, web & networked technologies, digital interventions and theoretical frameworks that are relevant to the curators interests in the project. Liam Wells & Tom Simmons have been successfully managing web-based performances over the past four months.
