press release

This major exhibition of more than 70 images by Lee Miller, one of the foremost international photographers of the 20th century, was curated by Jane Livingstone for the International Arts Foundation in California. The exhibition spans Miller’s career, from her early days as a society portraitist and fashion photographer, to her harrowing and powerful images of the last days of World War II in Europe.

The first female combat photojournalist, among many other exploits Miller witnessed the Liberation of Paris, saw the Eagle’s Nest in Berchesgaden in flames on the eve of Germany’s surrender, and photographed the liberation of Buchenwald and Dachau. After the war she continued to work for Vogue, and took many photographs of famous artists including Picasso, Miro, Man Ray and Tapies. However, it is perhaps for her witty Surrealist images that Lee Miller is best known.

Lee Miller is part of a programme of monographic exhibitions by three great photographers - both international and local - which coincides with Fotofest, the major international festival of photography.
