The international group exhibition LACHEN (LAUGHING) is the last chapter of a trilogy on everyday practices possessing a utopian dimension: the series began in 2018 with the exhibitions LIEBEN and SEX and will now continue with LACHEN. Laughing veers between contradictions, oscillating from one state of being to another. Laughing uncannily merges opposites: it is simultaneously physical and intellectual; it is communicative and interrupts communication; it instantiates a loss of control and at the same time is a way to establish control over an unsettling situation. Pleasurable and disturbing, laughing frequently results from strong emotions and at once triggers strong emotions. LACHEN is a twinned form of self-loss and self-reflection. This paradoxical quality of laughter is investigated in the exhibition by artists with regards to its poetic and political impacts.
