Keren Cytter - Mature content January 26–April 28, 2019

Museion opens its 2019 exhibition season with Mature content, the first solo exhibition in an Italian museum of Keren Cytter (b. Tel Aviv, 1977, lives and works in New York). An attentive observer of present-day life, which she compulsively records and reprocesses in videos, films, drawings, installations and novels, Keren Cytter recounts the contemporary world and the way it is over-run with the clichés churned out by the media.

With a deliberately hybrid approach, Cytter draws on everything from the French nouvelle vague to Dogma, producing films wich delve into the human condition in our era. Her narrative strategies, based on obsessive repetition and deliberately setting out to disorient the viewer, often leave spectators feeling they have been catapulted into a dream (or nightmare).

The project designed for Museion reflects the artist’s obsessive interest in the passage of time. The title, Mature content, is an ironic reference to the warnings for “adult-only” films, even if the exhibition really focuses on the different phases in life, from infancy through adolescence and onto adulthood. Existing works—like the films Der Spiegel, 2007, Four Seasons, 2009, The Coat, 2010 and the more recent Des Trous, 2018- will also be shown alongside new creations. These will include several drawings and for Museion the artist will create her first completely animated film, highlighting her work as an author of children’s books. Some of the new drawings are drawn directly on the Museion glass façades. The exhibition is completed by a number of works that focus on Keren Cytter’s activities as a curator of literary and poetic projects and her role in the A.P.E (Art Projects Era), which she founded along with curators Maaike Gouwenberg and Kathy Noble.

On Thursday evenings at 6pm, during the extended opening hours of Museion, the following videos by the artist will be shown on the museum’s basement floor on a rota basis: Object (2016), Experimental film (2002), Untitled (2009) and Game (2015).
