Käthe Kollwitz

Käthe Kollwitz’s art underlines the poverty, social struggle and grief surrounding the years of war and economic inflation in early 20th-century Germany. Her body of work, at once intensely personal and universal in its implications, is characterized by its disquieting emotional impact. This exhibition pays tribute to a recent anonymous gift to the Museum of 63 prints and 3 drawings that underscore how she developed imagery from drawings to prints and then rethought it in various media. Included are early detailed etchings, reductive yet highly expressive woodcuts and broadly drawn lithographs.
