press release

'We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive at where we started And know the place for the first time.' T. S. Eliot, Little Gidding

In the lead up to a residency based here in March 2006, Tramway will post the first edition of French artist Jocelyn Cottencin’s on-line magazine project in Tramway’s café, which can be accessed by all visitors.

As part of a multi artist/ country/ media project, artists from cities on the Atlantic Arc network have been invited by Cottencin to explore the idea of territory, boundaries, of leaving behind, going to and everything in between.

Artists who will participate include Patricia Almeida (Lisbon), Roderick Buchanan (Glasgow), Carla Cruz (Porto), Claudia Dias (Lisbon), Marcel Dinahet (Rennes), Tiago Guedes (Lisbon), Ion Munduate (San Sebastian), Asier Mendizabal (Bilbao), Miguel Pereira (Lisbon), Nuno Sacramento (Glasgow), Loïc Touzé (Rennes) and Sébastien Vonier (Rennes).

With Cottencin proposing an initial theme, the artists will first work together in person in La Crieé Art Centre in Rennes, this Autumn. The project will then evolve as a result of the artists' interaction and exchange, both in person and on-line, as a group and individually.

The project will then travel to arts venues throughout the four countries - La Crieé (Rennes, France); Frac des Pays-de-la-Loire (Nantes, France); Frac Bretagne (Châteaugiron, France); Arteleku (San Sebastian, Spain); University of Visual Arts (Bilbao, Spain); Sala Rekalde (Bilbao, Spain); Serralves Foundation (Porto, Portugal); In Contact (Lisbon, Portugal); and Tramway.

This project is one of a programme initiated by La Crieé to encourage and support artistic exchange through exploration of the idea of residency. Jocelyn Cottencin (1967) trained at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs de Paris, and is now based in Rennes. His arts practice is multi-disciplinary and involves design, choreography and publishing, as well as visual art.
