press release

„The eternity is a collective coscience which displays in chips, is an incomprehensible text, which knows that ...” The latest exhibition of Jiri David “When hell freezes over” is a continuation of artist’s cogitations about the eternity and reality which pervades him for ages. By the cycle of new paintings “Scraps”, as he admits, he completely intuitively established to his thesis of fragmented eternity from 1988. “The reality as a fragmented eternity is a realisation of language and the necessity of making anti-utterances, which deprives it of temptation of rejecting anything…” The exposed cycle of paintings “in the context of contemporary thesis, grown even more intimate. It didn’t lose nothing from it’s exterior importunate, but it became even more personal and suggestively auster, unpretentious, but not at all naïve”. Despite the fact that Jiri David in the past worked mostly with the fotography and installations, the actual exhibition consist only of paintings. Paintings made directly on the canvas, not primed, which causes that they seem delicate and fragile, fuzzy in it’s form, announcing some kind of loneliness and emptiness “which can be autoidentified by it’s own casuality”. “Startling in their emphatic presence of background’s swirling colours” – this is what was written about David’s latest works in the January ArtForum.
