Jane & Louise Wilson. Normapaths

Normapaths is Jane and Louise Wilson's first London solo exhibition. The twins collaborate on an arresting installation in which the gallery space is darkened, except at one end where a dilapidated room with decrepit wallpaper can be made out. The constructed room bears the evidence of an ominous and violent event that has recently taken place. A section of the room has been destroyed and the debris is strewn across the floor.

The explanation for this part of the show appears in another corner of the gallery where two projections show the twins performing bizarre and dangerous stunts in an empty brewery warehouse: colliding on a trampoline, swinging bags of fire and fist fighting. At times they succumb to violence, survive the most alarming stunts with fire and revel in exhilarating displays of acrobatic energy. At one point they burst through the walls of a dilapidated domestic interior recognisable as the room at the other end of the gallery, exuding delight in their destructive capabilities.

Jane and Louise Wilson were born in Newcastle, England in 1967. From 1986 to 1989 Jane trained at Newcastle Polytechnic while Louise studied at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art. Both artists graduated from Goldsmiths College in 1992. They were shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1999.
