press release

This exhibition will be the first large retrospective on the works of James Coleman (Ballaghaderreen, Ireland, 1941). Composed by some fifteen pieces, the show includes his early works, made in Milan during the 70s, to his 90s trilogy, formed by Background, Lapsus Exposure and INITIALS, as well as other crucial works such as Fly, Box, Untitled: Philippe VACHER and Retake with Evidence, featuring Harvey Keitel, which was presented at Documenta XII and explores, through audiovisual image proceeding from different supports, temporary relations between image and subject.

Coleman studied in Dublin and works in London and Paris before moving to Milan, where he developed his artistic career for twenty years before returning to the Irish capital. His work is part of such collections as the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, Museum Ludwing in Colony, the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst in Gant, and Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA). Recently, three of his pieces have been included in the Museo Reina Sofía’s collection.
