Iran do Espírito Santo One of Brazil’s most interesting contemporary artists, Iran do Espírito Santo is best known for his sensually minimal works that deal with issues of structure, design, place, surface and material with a rigorous conceptual sensibility. Do Espírito Santo undertakes a subtle subversion of Minimalism through abstracted everyday items and is particularly interested in the way his work relates to architecture. The artist transforms industrial design items, such as Phillipe Starck lamps and old fashioned candlesticks, into iconic minimalist sculptures. Working in stainless steel, glass, copper, stone or paint on plaster, he plays with subtle illusionistic devices that remain consistent from piece to piece. Do Espírito Santo’s exhibition comprises recent architectural and sculptural works and new work created specifically for IMMA.

Iran do Espírito Santo has exhibited widely in museums and galleries worldwide, his works are included in the collections of many prominent international museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego. His works have been included in the Venice Biennale, the Bienal de São Paulo, and the Istanbul Biennal. Recent exhibitions have included Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, Brazil, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS), Madrid, and the Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco.

The exhibition is curated by Enrique Juncosa, Director, IMMA, in collaboration with Paolo Colombo, Curator, MAXXI – Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo, Rome, and Rachael Thomas, Senior Curator: Head of Exhibitions, IMMA.

A publication, with texts by Enrique Juncosa and Rachael Thomas, accompanies the exhibition.
