press release

The exhibition brings to life the Swiss artist’s strong involvement with nature as a creative and mystical force.

Gardens, parks and studies of the structure and growth of plants are key motifs for the Swiss artist Paul Klee (1879-1940). He perceived this ‘dialogue with nature’ as one of the basic conditions for his existence, and saw clear parallels between his own activities and the processes of continuous movement and change found in nature. The exhibition focuses on nature-related themes in Klee’s art, and ranges from strict analyses of plants made while Klee was at Bauhaus, to his imaginatively subjective pictures of suffering fruit and enchanted gardens.

The exhibition includes more than 170 works. Some of these are on loan from the Stenersen Collection where Paul Klee is richly represented. The exhibition is organized by Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern, Switzerland, in association with Henie Onstad Art Centre, Oslo and Bergen Art Museum.
